Will Sen. David Sokola Stand With Pencader?

Sen. Sokola is the Chair of the Senate Education Committee. From 2005-2006 and for part of 2007 he served on the Newark Charter School Board of Directors.

Sen. Sokola's Response to a Constituent:

XXXXX,
Thank you for your email concerning Pencader Charter High School.

I appreciate your concerns and opinions on this issue, as I have been a long supporter of charter schools. I feel it is important for such schools to have an opportunity to succeed and make an impact in the lives of its students. While I can appreciate that some changes have been made at Pencader Charter School, such as the new leadership, these changes may not be enough to ward off very significant challenges that lie ahead.

You mentioned in your email that the new School Leader had presented a balanced budget for the upcoming school year. I believe that this balanced budget is contingent only upon receiving a loan, which so far has not been granted.

I understand and share your frustrations in that poor planning and bad judgment on the part of the previous administration has caused great hardship for the school. Going forward, we must implement policies to ensure that these schools meet the standards in their Charters, and do so within their budgets.

Thank you again for your email and for contacting me about this issue.

Senator Sokola, prove to your constituents, many of whom are Pencader students and families, that you do indeed support charter schools and support Pencader. Allow it to have its opportunity to continue to succeed and make an impact in the lives of its students. Stand with Pencader!

Changes have been made. A new school leader and school board president have been working tirelessly to right the financial wrongs of the past. All that they need is time to allow these changes to take effect and move this school forward financially.

The academics at this school are not in question. Students are receiving a high-quality education, evidenced in many ways including the 97% of the PCHS Class of 2011 who have chosen to further their education by attending an institute of higher education in the fall.

Please do not let down the 600+ students and their families, the school's 3 alumni, the teachers and staff, and other stakeholders at Pencader Charter High School. Show yourself to be that supporter of charter schools!

You and your colleagues are all invited to the Pencader Open House event on Tuesday, June 21 at 7 pm at the school. Please attend and show that you stand by Pencader!

Isn't that why House Bill 119 was created in 2009?

Yes, and Sokola voted for it. Will it take a News Journal article to wake up these legislators and will the paper do the work to alert the public that the laws on the books are being ignored?
